Volleyball ON SPORTSBUDDY

VOLLEYBALL, SCORED RALLY BY RALLY.

SportsBuddy is a volleyball tournament app built around the rally: the scorer taps who won the point and how they won it, the serve moves with the side-out, and the set closes itself at the target you configured. Spectators follow the live scoreline set by set on the web, and the points table ranks teams on sets won and lost without anyone opening a spreadsheet.

A volleyball scoreboard has two numbers on it, which is why almost every scoring app treats the sport as solved. It is not solved. Two numbers cannot tell you who is putting the ball away, whether a run of points came off the block or off the other side's errors, or which set the match actually turned in.

SportsBuddy records each rally as an event, not as an increment. Every point carries the player who won it and the way it was won — spike, block, ace, foul, error — so the point-by-point feed reads like a match report by the time the fifth set arrives. The serve is tracked as its own piece of state through every side-out, and it survives an undo or a score correction rather than quietly drifting a rotation out of sync.

The format is yours to set. Twenty-five to win a set with a fifteen-point decider is the default because it is what most people play, but the target, the decider and the number of sets are tournament settings — so a beach event on best-of-three to 21 is configured, not fought with.

SCORING

The scoring screen

What the person at the scorer's table taps between whistles.

Every rally to a player

WHO SCORED? lists the players on court and the point goes to the one who won it. When nobody deserves individual credit — a net touch, a rotation fault, a ball that lands off a deflection — TEAM POINT and NO INDIVIDUAL PLAYER keep the score honest instead of inventing a scorer.

Point types that become statistics

Each rally is filed as a SPIKE, BLOCK, ACE, FOUL, ERROR or OTHER. That single extra tap is what turns the point-by-point feed into something worth reading afterwards, and it is what the spectator view colours and icons its timeline from.

Serve tracked through every side-out

You choose which side takes the SET SERVE, and from there the serve follows the team that wins the rally. The serving side is held as real state — shown on the scoreboard, broadcast to spectators, and rebuilt correctly when you undo a point or correct the score.

Sets that know when they are over

The screen watches the target and the two-point margin for you and offers SET OVER — TAP TO FINALIZE at the right moment. Deuce, set point and match point are flagged as they happen rather than worked out in your head at 24-24.

Fix a drifted scoreboard

CORRECT SCORE lets you set the true score and CONFIRM CORRECTION writes it through — with the serving side adjusted to match. For a mis-tap on the last rally, the point-by-point log is the audit trail of what was actually entered.

Hand the match to another phone

Log in on a second device, open the match under IN PROGRESS, and the screen rebuilds the live state — sets won, points in the current set, the serving team and the rally history — then carries on from the current point.

RULES

Format set per tournament

Indoor six-a-side, beach doubles and a school event on shortened sets are three different games wearing the same name. These are fields on the tournament, not assumptions baked into the app.

Points to win a set

Twenty-five by default, changed to whatever the event plays. The set still has to be won by two, which is the one thing the engine holds fixed because it is the rule nobody actually varies.

A different target for the decider

The deciding set runs to its own number — fifteen by default. Set it once and the scorer's screen and the public scoreboard both switch targets automatically when that set arrives.

Best of three or best of five

Sets needed to win the match is a tournament setting, so a pool-stage best-of-three and a best-of-five final live in the same event without anyone re-explaining the format to the scorer.

Time-outs, or none at all

Two per team is the FIVB-style default. Set the allowance to zero and the TIME-OUT button disappears entirely — a scorer cannot record a time-out a tournament does not have.

Lineups, when you want them

Team owners can nominate the players taking the court before the match, or the scorer taps SKIP — SET LATER and scores against the full squad. Individual credit works either way.

SPECTATORS

What everyone watching sees

One link, opened in a browser, with no account and no install — the thing you paste into the club group when the fifth set starts.

The live set, live

Sets won across the top, the current set's points at full size underneath, and the serving team named below them. It moves within seconds of the scorer's tap.

Set point, match point, deuce

The scoreboard flags the state of the set as it happens — a SET POINT or MATCH POINT pill the moment one lands, and DEUCE when the two-point margin kicks in. Nobody has to do the arithmetic to know the tension.

Every set as its own tab

Each set played gets a tab with its final scoreline, the live one marked with a pulse. Tap back through them to see how a match that finished 3-2 actually went.

Point by point

The selected set rally by rally: the point type, the player, the team, the running score after that point and the time it happened — colour-coded so a run of blocks or a string of errors is visible at a glance.

Time-outs are visible too

When a side calls one, the public scoreboard says so. A spectator refreshing a frozen score at least knows why it is frozen.

ORGANIZERS

For whoever is running the tournament

The league-table arithmetic and the fixture admin, both handled.

Standings ranked on sets

Points on your own per-win configuration, then set difference as the tiebreaker — sets won and sets lost accumulated from every completed match automatically. No spreadsheet, and no argument about who finished second.

Pools and playoffs

Split the entries into pools and the site draws one table per pool, marks the configured number of qualifiers in each, and keeps pool results out of the knockout bracket they feed.

Registrations and squads

Teams register themselves and you approve or reject. Squads are built by the team owners, which means the spelling of every player's name is their problem rather than yours.

A scorer per court

Assign each fixture to whoever is on that court. It appears in their assignments; clear it and hand it to someone else when the rota changes.

One public page for the event

Fixtures, live scores, results and the pool tables on a single shareable link — so you stop being the person the whole hall messages for the score.

VOLLEYBALL QUESTIONS

VOLLEYBALL ANSWERED.

Asked most often about volleyball on SportsBuddy. The screen-by-screen version of every flow lives in the step-by-step guides.

Can SportsBuddy score a volleyball match point by point?

Yes. Every rally is recorded individually with the player who won the point and the point type — spike, block, ace, foul, error or other — and the serving side is tracked through each side-out. Spectators see the new point within seconds, and the full point-by-point log for each set is kept for afterwards.

Can I change the points per set for a volleyball tournament?

Yes. Points to win a set, the deciding set's own target and the number of sets needed to win the match are all set when you create the tournament. Twenty-five, fifteen and best-of-five are the defaults; a shortened school or beach format is a configuration, not a workaround. Sets are still won by two points.

Does the volleyball scorer track which team is serving?

Yes. The scorer chooses which side takes the first serve of each set, and from then on the serve follows the team that wins the rally. The serving side is shown on the scorer's screen, broadcast to the public scoreboard, and restored correctly if a point is undone or the score is corrected.

How do volleyball time-outs work in the app?

The scorer taps TIME-OUT and answers which team called it, and the public scoreboard shows a time-out is in progress. The allowance is a tournament setting — two per team by default. Set it to zero and the button is not offered at all, so a scorer cannot record a time-out the competition does not allow.

How are volleyball standings calculated?

Teams are ranked on points from your tournament's own per-win configuration, and ties are broken on set difference — sets won minus sets lost across every completed match, accumulated automatically as results land. Tournaments with pools get one table per pool with the qualifying places marked.

Can spectators watch a volleyball match without the app?

Yes. Every public volleyball match has a web page with the live scoreline, sets won, the serving team, set point and match point flags, a tab for every set played and the full point-by-point feed. No account and no install, so a single link works for everyone in the hall and everyone who could not make it.
